The Brooklyn Center Expanded Response Model is a four-piece model that addresses the community's need for a holistic approach to community safety. The Brooklyn Center Expanded Response Model adds to our first responder system, but does not facilitate enforcement in any capacity. The four pieces to the expanded response model are prevention, intervention, response and recovery.

Meet the Team

The Expanded Response Team is a result of extensive collaboration between the City of Brooklyn Center, Hennepin County, Canopy Roots, North Memorial, Hennepin County 911 Dispatch, Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, community stakeholders, conversations with residents and local advocacy groups. The goal of the Expanded Response Team is to offer the right help at the right time, helping people before concerns escalate to an emergency. The expanded response team acts as a first responder, but does not facilitate any type of enforcement.

Our Expanded Response Team model consists of mental health practitioners, social workers and community paramedics. These key roles are provided by Hennepin County and Canopy Roots.

Our Role

The expanded response model is a holistic approach to public safety and adds an additional layer to the city's first responder system. Housed under the Office of Community Prevention, Health and Safety (OCPHS), the Expanded Response Team reports to the Director of OCPHS, not the Brooklyn Center Police Department. The goal of the Expanded Response Team is to offer the right help at the right time, helping people before concerns escalate to an emergency.

The Expanded Response Team will be dispatched to calls

Monday through Friday, October through December 2024.

Additional coverage will begin in early 2025

Our Response

The Expanded Response Team is triaged and assigned by the 911 dispatcher. The response team may respond to calls that the 911 dispatcher identifies as urgent and non-violent. The Expanded Response Team will not be dispatched to calls involving weapons or medical emergencies.

If the Expanded Response Team is not available to respond, a police officer will, there is no guarantee of the Expanded Response Team’s response

The Expanded Response Team will be dispatched to calls Monday through Friday, October through December 2024. Additional coverage will begin in early 2025
