To promote the preservation, restoration and maintenance of diverse and biologically stable natural plant communities. 

Overview of Ordinance

  • Registration with the City is required
  • Setback Requirements:
    • Native and naturalistic vegetation (garden) shall be at least five feet back from side and rear lot lines
  • Setback Exemptions (No setback required if):
    • An opaque fence at least five feet in height installed between the garden and the side and rear lot lines
    • Abuts native and naturalistic vegetation on an adjacent lot
  • The garden shall be maintained at least one time per year and can not contain noxious weeds
  • Clearly defined by landscape edging or fencing
  • Shall not extend into the right of way
  • If the garden is to be seen by the public, a sign shall be posted (no smaller than ten square inches, no larger than one square foot, and no higher than three feet tall)
  • Signs are available at City Hall - Community Development Department.
  • Any native and naturalistic vegetation within 18 inches of any public street, walk, bikeway, or alley shall be no more than 12 inches tall
  • The duration of transition into a native and naturalistic vegetation area shall not exceed more than three growing seasons

Registration Process

Submit an Application for Native & Naturalistic Vegetation to the Community Development Department, Attn: Xiong Thao. 

There is no fee for the application. Notice of the City's decision will be sent to the applicant.
