Firearm Restrictions
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) explains the permit process. Restrictions are listed in the application and at the links below. Individuals with restrictions shall not be entitled to possess a pistol or any other firearm.
Gun Purchase Permit
Permit to purchase a firearm applications can be obtained on the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) website, or in person any time in our lobby at our office located at 6645 Humboldt Ave N, Brooklyn Center. Once your application has been submitted, the police department has thirty (30) days to process the application. Your application must be filled out completely. Incomplete applications will result in a delay or denial. A background check is part of the permit process. Applicants will receive a notification of approval or denial.
How to Apply for a Permit to Purchase
The police department requires a photocopy of your government issued identification (both sides) submitted with your application.

Permit to Carry
Permits to carry are obtained through the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.

Straw Purchase
The illegal purchase of a firearm for someone else is also known as a “straw purchase.” This is a federal felony, carries a sentence of up to 15 years imprisonment, and/or a fine of up to $250,000.
