History of Brooklyn Center Police Department
Our mission is to protect and serve in a manner that preserves public trust. This page will provide a synopsis of our rich history, department divisions and command staff contact information.
The Officers of the Brooklyn Center Police Department have been bravely and proudly serving this city since 1953. Bob Cahlander was promoted from elected Constable to appointed Marshal, and after already serving the city for 20 years, he was then appointed the first Chief of Police for Brooklyn Center.
With Chief Cahlander’s dedication as a model, your current Police Department has 47 diverse officers serving with integrity, compassion, and fairness. Brooklyn Center Police officers not only fight crime, but they give of themselves, focusing on children in the community. Some officers run the annual BC Safety Academy, read to and mentor children, and help teenagers explore careers in public service through the Police Explorers’ program. In addition to their regularly assigned job duties, officers participate in many self-initiated volunteer activities and events in the community including many fund raising events for Special Olympics Minnesota, school safety patrol appreciation and fellow Emergency Responders in need.
The past 60 years have brought new faces and new technology to the Brooklyn Center Police Department. However, police staff continue to boldly provide services with the same commitment to excellence, whether responding to a call or otherwise serving the community.
