Police Officer Application Process
Application
All candidates seeking employment with the City of Brooklyn Center are required to submit an online application. Necessary application information includes personal information (name, address phone number), work history, references and a list of supplemental questions to be completed. All police officer applications will be scored by a Commander within the department.
Interview
Applicants selected to move on to the interview phase will be asked to conduct a panel interview with current officers. Interviews will last approximately 30 minutes and consist of about 8 questions. Virtual interviews may be conducted on a case by case basis. Interviewees are also encouraged at this stage to ask questions in order to learn more about the department.
Background Investigation
Candidates moving on to this phase will be asked to complete a detailed packet regarding their personal history in order to determine suitability for employment with the City. Specific background information includes but is not limited to:
- Criminal History Records (federal, state, county, local)
- Police Reports (federal, state, county, and local)
- State and Local Accident Reports including different jurisdictions
- State and Federal Sexual Predatory Offender Registration List
- Driving Records (Minnesota and other states)
- Employment References
- Education/Training (transcripts/certificates)
- Personal References
- Credit Report (Equifax or other contracted Credit Report Agency)
- Financial Records/Transactions
- Military Records
- Fingerprints
During the background phase candidates will also be required to complete a ride-along with a patrol officer. Ride-alongs are scheduled based on the candidate’s availability.
Chief’s Interview
Candidates successfully completing the background investigation will be asked to complete a one on one 30-minute interview with the Chief of Police.
Medical Evaluation
Selected candidates will be asked to complete a medical evaluation to determine if they are free from any medical condition complete which might adversely effect their abilities to complete the duties required of the police officer position. Testing in this phase includes:
- Drug Screening Test
- Hearing Test
- Physical Abilities Test
Psychological Evaluation
Selected candidates will be asked to complete an oral interview with a licensed psychologist in order to determine if the candidate is free from any emotional or mental condition which might adversely effect their ability to complete the duties required for the police officer position. Evaluations will typically take 4-6 hours.
Job Offer
Congratulations! You have successfully completed all of the steps necessary for employment. You will be provided an official job offer and contacted by the Field Training Supervisor to determine your start date.
