Officers of the Brooklyn Center Police Department work in a very diverse community. Our policing style is best summarized as a community policing model.

Training

The Brooklyn Center Police Department invests in officers and values training. In your first few years, much of the training you will receive is mandatory; however, based upon prior training and experience, this is subject to change. All officers must complete our academy, which consists of two weeks of onboarding. This ensures officers are trained and versed in policies and procedures of the Department prior to hitting the street. This is designed to set up officers for success. This timeframe consists of de-escalation techniques, hands on arrest and control techniques, qualification of department issued firearms and less lethal munition systems, as well as scenario-based training.

After academy, officers will spend time with their dedicated field training officers. Traditionally this is a three and a half month process. The time can be shortened or lengthened dependent upon the candidate and their prior experience.

Work Schedules

Our work schedules are 12-hour shifts allowing for every other weekend off and they are in a 2-week repeating pattern. The following work schedules are typical for an average patrol officer and are selected based upon a shift bid.
