Background

The City of Brooklyn Center, Trust for Public Land, and Xcel Energy are partnering to develop a pollinator habitat in Brooklyn Center. The habitat will benefit monarch butterflies and other pollinators. Brooklyn Center Elementary STEAM will also use the habitat as an outdoor classroom. This project is part of a broader initiative to protect and enhance pollinator habitats throughout the city, including residential homes through the State's Lawns to Legumes program, municipal sites, and schools like Brooklyn Center Elementary STEAM.

Project Area

The planned habitat is approximately an acre between North Logan Avenue and James Avenue North, under the Xcel Energy transmission lines (The dark red rectangles at the top of the map below). It is a pilot project that may expand to just east of Camden Avenue North over the next five years, depending on its success.

Land preparation and planting are scheduled for September, October, and November 2023.
