2016 Brooklyn Center TH 252 Corridor Study

The final Trunk Highway (TH) 252 Corridor Study is complete with a Recommended Access Configuration for the corridor within Brooklyn Center. The Brooklyn Center City Council held a public hearing pertaining to the study and the recommended alternative on Monday, March 14, 2016, at 7:00 p.m.

Project Overview

TH 252 is an important north-south roadway connecting I-94/694 and TH 610 in the cities of Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park. This corridor has been identified as having a number of transportation issues among which include; (a) poor intersection operation with long delays on the side streets; (b) congestion during peak hours; (c) pedestrian safety issues; and (d) documented high accident rates.

A consultant, WSB & Associates, Inc., was hired to perform a study in partnership with the Cities of Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park, Metropolitan Council, Metro Transit, and the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The study is intended to identify the ultimate vision of this corridor and short-term improvement strategies that will mitigate the above-referenced issues until transitioning into the final corridor plan.

Study Goals

To establish a long-term vision for TH 252 and identify short-term improvements and strategies to address existing congestion, safety and neighborhood connectivity issues at the three intersections in Brooklyn Center (66th, 70th and 73rd Avenues).

Objectives

Identify expressway or freeway options for future vision.
Identify interim safety improvements.
Recommend interim operations improvements.
Identify improvements for pedestrian and bicycle crossings.
The document proposed transit improvements.
Recommend projects for future competitive federal funding programs.
Develop recommendations for implementing interim and long-term improvements.

March 14, 2016 - City Council public hearing and consideration of the Feasibility Study as a planning guide.
