"Two Brooklyns, One Vision," a Racial Healing Event Series

  • Date: 01/16/2024 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Two Brooklyns One Vision: Racial Justice and Healing Initiative

The cities of Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park have come together to embark on a transformative journey called Two Brooklyns One Vision: Racial Justice and Healing Initiative. January’s lineup features the compelling Netflix series "When They See Us" created by Ava DuVernay. At the core of the showing of these episodes is understanding racial trauma in order to share skills towards healing and community building. We encourage participation by youth; however, these viewings and conversations will include mature content.

The series explores the lives of Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam and Korey Wise, known as the "Central Park Five" or the "Exonerated Five," from the time of their arrest to their eventual exoneration. It delves into issues such as racial profiling, systemic injustice, and the impact of the criminal justice system on marginalized communities. "When They See Us" received critical acclaim for its powerful storytelling, acting performances, and its examination of the social and racial issues surrounding the case.

We’ll be talking about these important issues and more importantly, you will gain the skills and confidence to become an accomplice in dismantling systems of oppression, healing and advancing whole communities.
