Sanitary Sewer Utility operations provide for the collection and pumping of sanitary sewage through a system of mains and lift stations. Sewage is treated by the Metropolitan Council - Environmental Services. The City has 105.51 miles of sanitary sewer (ranging in size from 8-inches to 24-inches in diameter) and 8,774 service connections. Included in this division's responsibilities are the routine preventative maintenance of the City's collection system and its appurtenances, monitoring of inflow and infiltration, a televised inspection of the interiors of sanitary mains, and customer service such as providing sewer locations. In the event of a sanitary sewer backup, residents should contact the City before calling a sewer cleaning service.

Sanitary Sewer Utilities Goals:

  • Root saw approximately 15-miles of main every year on a continuous, rotating basis.
  • Maintain routine line cleaning of known trouble spots, as well as regular routine cleaning to remove grit, grease, and roots.
  • Monitor inflow and infiltration levels and take necessary action to reduce or eliminate.
  • Provide timely locating services as per Gopher State One Call.
  • Televise all project areas and trouble spots as identified by City staff and establish repairs and/or repair projects from information obtained.
  • Work together with the Engineering Division in reconstruction areas to inspect new installations as well as repairs on mains and services.
